The city of Hutchinson was founded in 1871, when frontiersman Clinton "C.C." Hutchinson contracted with the Santa Fe Railway to make a town at the railroad's crossing over the Arkansas River. The town actually started less than a mile north, on the banks of Cow Creek, where a few houses already existed. Hutchinson has the state's first water-mill erected. Local salt deposits were soon discovered for the first time, when drilling was taking place for oil in the area. Salt mining would become a major industry in Hutchinson, with the city eventually earning the nickname "Salt City". The official Kansas State Fair has been held in Hutchinson for well over a hundred years. Visiting the Cosmosphere has always been a favorite highlight of my growing up years, and have enjoyed bring our children there now.
