The city of Marion, as well as Marion County were named in honor of Francis Marion, a brigadier general of the American Revolutionary War. It all began when in 1860 settlers in five covered wagons were told by surveyors that there was good, virgin farmland about 60 miles to the southwest of Emporia. The surveyors called it the best land in the territory. One of the travelers in the group, was the first to build a shanty on the site where the Santa Fe Depot Library now stands.
