Our founder has purchased, renovated and sold approximately a dozen homes in the area. In addition, our founder was on the Newton Planning Commission for about 5 years, has sat on a non-profit board as well as the Code Review Board for several years. Making Smart Decisions Throughout The Home-building Process
At Heritage Home Works, we understand that building a home is a major undertaking. There is a tremendous amount of information to consider, and knowing which choices are right for your home and family can sometimes feel overwhelming. One of the things we enjoy most about building homes is educating homeowners throughout the process, helping them understand their options so they can make informed decisions with confidence. Even with a rural home like this one, there are countless details and considerations that go into creating a home that works for the family who will live there. We’re proud to share some of that process here, including the home rendering, foundation plan, and first-floor plan. Our goal is to make sure every important decision is carefully considered and that, together, we’re building the best possible home for your family.
From The Ground Up: Key Construction Milestones
Every home build has its surprises, and building in the Flint Hills can certainly provide a few. The first major step was getting the foundation ready, with the footings formed and prepared for the concrete pour. When we began excavating the basement, we hit rock sooner than expected, which meant we couldn’t dig quite as deep as we originally wanted. That required additional dirt hauling and extra site work—but such is life in the Flint Hills! Once the excavation was ready, the footings were poured and the foundation layout was snapped onto the concrete, marking exactly where the walls would be constructed. To keep the process moving efficiently, the wall forms were already staged inside the basement so the crew would have them ready when needed. The vertical rebar was also installed, with the horizontal rebar to be tied in before the wall forms are placed.
With the footings complete, the next major milestone was pouring the foundation walls. Once the concrete cured, the crew began actively stripping the forms, with some still in place around the porch walls. It’s an exciting point in the build because the foundation now clearly shows the shape and layout of the home. From there, the framers began setting the roof trusses, using a telehandler with a truss boom to make the process much more efficient. The crew also installs the barge rafters and sheathing on the gables while the components are still on the ground. It’s a smart approach that allows them to complete more of the work safely and efficiently before lifting everything into position. With the foundation complete and the roof structure beginning to take shape, the home is starting to look like the house envisioned in the original plans.
The framing is now well complete, and the home has reached an exciting milestone—it’s ready for roofing and siding. At this stage, you can really begin to see the finished home emerging. And if you look closely at the foreground, you’ll notice a pile of rock. There was rock everywhere on this project! Working through the rocky Flint Hills terrain added its share of challenges, but the crew kept things moving. From another angle, you can see the framed home with the windows and exterior doors now installed. The garage doors are still to come, but the structure is clearly taking shape and getting closer to its finished appearance.
The roof was completed just in time to protect the home from a little winter weather. While last winter didn’t bring much snow, we did get a few reminders that being covered up at the right time matters!
The garage doors were installed while the siding was still unpainted. The next step was painting the siding, bringing the exterior much closer to completion.
Insulation, Drywall & The Fireplace Begin To Take Shape
With the exterior taking shape, the work has now moved inside. Wet-blown cellulose insulation has been installed, helping prepare the home for the next major interior stage as drywall begins arriving on site.
The wood-burning fireplace is also becoming a focal point of the room. The large red fire-protection board surrounding the firebox is an important part of the installation and provides the required protection around the fireplace. At the same time, the trim carpenter is working on the built-ins and mantel, adding the custom details that will give this space its finished character.
Now turn attention to the finishing details that really begin to define the interior. The painter is working through the stained areas, walls, and trim, adding color and character throughout the home.
The lower cabinets on either side of the fireplace are also taking shape, with the cabinet doors now ordered and ready for installation. The fireplace is getting its own custom treatment as well. A new concrete mantel is being installed because the mantel must be non-combustible due to its proximity to the firebox. Once the mantel is in place, the surrounding stonework will add another layer of texture and character to this focal point of the room.
MORE INTERIOR SPACES COME TO LIFE
The engineered wood flooring has now been installed. With plenty of work still taking place throughout the house, protective paper has been placed over the new floors to help keep them protected from the activity of the remaining construction.
The kitchen is taking another big step forward with the countertops and backsplash now complete. The finishing touch still to come is the installation of the range hood, but the space is quickly coming together.
This home is nearing completion.
